In 2020, I worked on creating 3D and motion assets for the 2020 PADC Skulls Showcase, Perth’s annual advertising and design awards during a year that disrupted the industry.
Marking the 40th anniversary of the PADCs, the event shifted away from its usual awards format and instead focused on celebrating the creative work produced during a challenging year. The outcome was a showcase held at the WA Museum Boola Bardip, bringing the community together in a more reflective and accessible way.
Working alongside Joseph Dennis, the visual direction centred on a reimagined version of the iconic Skull trophy. A key technique involved capturing and manipulating imagery of the event location and using it as a custom HDRI. This was then used to light and texture the 3D form, allowing the metallic surface to inherit colour, distortion and environmental context directly from the space itself.
The result was a fluid, iridescent object that felt both digital and physical, grounded in the environment yet abstracted through reflection and motion. This approach translated effectively across social assets, where subtle movement and shifting light helped bring the identity to life.
The project balanced technical exploration with conceptual intent, using light and material to connect the work back to place while celebrating the resilience of the local creative community.
